Last class we talked a lot about the irony that the Elvis character in the novel was an African man imitating a white American singer who sang music inspired from African American musical traditions.  In some ways this shows how the character in the novel was challenging his “identity”.  In other ways it shows the Western and global influence on the culture of Lagos.  I believe it also challenges the readers to question whether or not any ‘group’ has a monopoly or claim on a cultural tradition.  Would it have been ironic if the novel’s main character was named Nat (who was also referred to as “the King”) and he sang music by Nat King Cole?  We would still have an African man imitating a western singer who got his musical inspiration from music that has African roots.  Both the character in the novel and Nat King Cole would have had as different lives as the character in the novel had from Elvis Presley.
